Most tweeted personnel this week – Aung San Suu Kyi

The Twittersphere, as everyone knows, is often the Stupidosphere or Shallowsphere, but this week, for a change, a meme of real substance has triumphed: Aung San Suu Kyi, the pro-democracy icon and Nobel Peace Prize winner who has been under house arrest for 15 of the past 21 years in Burma, but was released on Nov. 13, tops our chart.

Bukit Panjang gangster slashers arrested

Six men have been arrested in connection with Monday night’s Bukit Panjang slashing attack that left several youths injured. Aged between 15 and 23 years old, the parang-wielding gang attacked several teens in two separate incidents on Monday. First, a 20-year-old assistant technician was slashed in the back and legs at around 10pm at Block 418 Fajar Road.

Thomson Fertility Centre error

When Thomson Fertility Centre’s error in giving a couple the wrong sperm during an IVF was discovered, the Health Ministry took a system approach, said Mr Khaw, in his first public comments on the incident on Saturday. He spoke on the matter at the sidelines of a community event, where he also stressed on the need to move away from witch-hunting, reported The Sunday Times.

Teen stabbed at Downtown East, dies from injuries

Halloween celebrations at Downtown East on Saturday turned into a real-life horror story when a young student was violently attacked in full view of a crowd. He later died in hospital from his wounds. According to The Straits Times, 19-year-old Darren Ng Wei Jie was with two friends when they got into a staring incident with another group of about 10 teenagers at the resort and entertainment complex in Pasir Ris on Saturday afternoon.

ERP rates increase from next month

Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) charges at four areas will increase by S$1 from November 1. The increase is part of the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) quarterly review of ERP-priced roads and expressways. Motorists will have to pay S$4 from 8.30am to 9am at the gantries at the East Coast Parkway (ECP) at Fort Road and the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway slip road.

PSI level dips after heavy rain

Heavy rain over various parts of Singapore in the late afternoon yesterday saw the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) dropping to below 50, which is in the good range. And if the showers continue today, Singaporeans can experience a respite from the haze. A spokesman from the National Environment Agency told The Sunday Times the hazy conditions would likely continue today, but showers are expected and it could bring more relief.

Haze returns to Singapore

By Ion Danker – October 19th, 2010 The National Environment Agency (NEA) says the prevailing southwesterly winds have brought in some smoke haze to Singapore from the fires in Sumatra. A statement from the NEA said that the 24-hour PSI at 4pm was 56, in the ‘moderate’ range, but rose to 84 at 8pm. The 24-hr PSI is a measure of the air quality over a period of 24 hours.
